Curated by Diana Nemiroff
Organized and circulated by Carleton University Art Gallery
The Varley Art Gallery presents Carol Wainio: The Book, organized and circulated by Carleton University Art Gallery in Ottawa. Curated by Diana Nemiroff, this exhibition offers a survey of works created by established painter Carol Wainio.
In her work, Wainio's painting take inspiration from illustrated books, drawing on rich and varied sources from medieval manuscripts to children’s fairytales such as Puss in Boots and Jack and the Beanstalk. The book, appearing in these paintings as open structures standing within muddy-colored landscapes, serves as framing devices for the narratives depicted. Her characters, humans and animals alike bleed out from the confines of their storybooks to populate her paintings. The artist’s research into the history and evolution of fairytales has fueled her interest in the narrative power of images. These multi-faceted works explore the changing nature of illustrations, but also serve as a point of departure for a reflection on contemporary concerns linked to globalization, poverty and the environment.
Born in Sarnia Ontario, Carol Wainio now lives and works in Ottawa, where she is Adjunct Professor in the Visual Arts department at the University of Ottawa. She has exhibited widely in Canada and internationally, including at the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Venice Biennale, and the Galleria Communale d’Arte Moderna in Bologna. In Canada her paintings are found in major corporate, private, and public collections. She is represented by Wynick/Tuck Gallery (Toronto), Galerie René Blouin (Montréal), and Trepanier-Baer Gallery (Calgary).
