RECOMMENDATION:
THAT the “Daniels-Fairty House” at 7060 Markham
Road be approved for designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act,
as recommended by Heritage Markham;
AND THAT the Clerk’s Department be authorized
to:
* publish and serve Council’s Notice of Intention to Designate as per
the requirements of the
Act; and
* prepare the Designation By-law for the property.

PURPOSE:
To recommend to Council that the
“Daniels-Fairty House” (historical reference) at 7060 Markham Road be
designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural
heritage value and interest.
BACKGROUND:
The Daniels-Fairty House, a Georgian tradition
farmhouse dating from c.1851, is listed on the Markham Inventory of Heritage
Buildings. It has been a Town-owned
property since 1991, when it was acquired as part of parkland dedication in
connection with the surrounding subdivision.
The building is currently tenanted by a cultural organization.

OPTIONS/DISCUSSION:
The Town of
Should Council decide to proceed
with the recommendation to designate the Daniels-Fairty House under Part IV of
the Ontario Heritage Act, the Clerk’s Department should be authorized
to:
* publish and serve on the property owner, the Ontario Heritage Foundation and
the public
through a newspaper advertisement, Council’s
notice of intention to designate the property as
per the requirements of the Act; and,
* prepare the Designation By-law for the property at
FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
There are no financial impacts outlined in this
staff report. However, for any future work contemplated on the building by the
Town, as a designated building, a restoration approach will be required to be
followed with respect to the designated features. This is the same standard recommended for any
designated property in the Town, either in private or public ownership.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
There are no environmental impacts resulting
from this report.
ACCESSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS:
There are no accessibility impacts
resulting from this report.

Heritage designation helps to
achieve a quality community by recognizing, promoting and protecting a heritage
resource, which strengthens the sense of community.

This report has been circulated to the Manager
of Real Property and to the Manager of Asset Management for review and comment.
