1.         MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON JUNE 20, 2005

THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS:

That the minutes of the meeting of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee held on June 20, 2005 be adopted.

2.         ECO ART PROJECT DEBRIEFING

The Committee agreed that the 2005 Eco Art Project was an extremely successful initiative, especially considering the tight timelines in place. Members noted that the artists were very cooperative and brought a good deal of enthusiasm to the event. Additional comments were made regarding the flyers for the event in that they were very well put together, however, it was noted that further distribution of advertising materials would have better promoted the project.

The Committee agreed that improved signage should be implemented for the pieces still standing as well as for those to be displayed in upcoming events. It was suggested that, in the future, installation sites be moved closer to more frequently traveled areas in order to increase exposure for the artists and their work. The Thornhill and Beaupre Park sites were mentioned as being somewhat far removed from high traffic areas. The Committee agreed that each person should begin to list more appropriate locations in which future installations could occur. Members discussed that the possibility of being able to monitor or track the number of visitors to an event would be an asset for future planning.

There was discussion with respect to the temporary nature of the pieces and whether future events should include one or more permanent works. Ms. J. McIntyre submitted and highlighted an ‘Eco-Art Evaluation’ from Ms. Dawn Dale, one of the contributing artists.

It was recommended that any future Eco Art event be more closely associated with local schools and that it continue alignment with the Communities in Bloom initiative, which would be in the national competition in the summer of 2006.  Ms. McIntyre noted that she would be emailing the group to organize details with respect to the formation of a new Eco Art Sub-Committee which would be responsible for organizing the 2006 event.

The Markham Public Art Advisory Committee resolved that the Eco Art Event be repeated in 2006.

2.         INITIAL DISCUSSION REGARDING MPAAC GUIDELINES

Mr. V. Puri forwarded his thanks to the Committee and informed members of his intent to withdraw from the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee (MPAAC) effective immediately.

The Committee discussed the mandate of MPAAC and noted that although the Eco Art event should be repeated, the Committee should begin to develop guidelines and criteria used to assess the installation of permanent public art pieces within the Town of Markham. Members discussed that their vision statements should be brought forward to a consultant to assist with this process.

It was recommended that MPAAC consider creating a roster of local artists and an inventory of art work currently in place within the Town. The Committee noted that this archive could be extended outward to the public via the Markham webpage.

THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS:

That Markham staff retain a consultant to assist with the development of guidelines and criteria which the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee would use to assess public art installations within the Town of Markham.
