We the undersigned (please see attached), residents of the area immediately adjacent to Markham District High School, wish to express our disappointment at the lack of communication in announcing the meeting held April 12, 2007 at the school. The purpose of the meeting was to announce the proposed new high school and the eventual demolition of the existing high school.
At the meeting it was announced that construction would tentatively begin in the spring/summer of 2008 and not end until the summer of 2010, when the existing high school is demolished. Because of the proximity of some of our homes to the proposed construction site, some residents will be directly affected by the 24 – 30 month construction period. Our environment and quality of life will be directly impacted during this time. During construction we will be faced with noise, dust and dirt and possibly a variety of unforeseen problems. During demolition we may face another set of potential problems.
Since our quality of life will be directly affected during this time period, and that the surrounding landscape will be forever altered, we are requesting that a second meeting be held. The area residents should be given the opportunity to see the preliminary drawings and have an opportunity to meeting the representatives from the Board, the school and from Moffat and Duncan Architectural firm.
Unlike other secondary schools in the area, MDHS is in the unique position of being situated in the middle of this community, thus it is important the school, the board and the councillors of this area strive to maintain harmonious relations with the area residents and the broader community.
Respectfully Yours,
Deirdre Kavanagh
