2.         MUNICIPAL PUBLIC ART PLAN

Linda Irvine, Manager, Parks & Open Spaces advised the Committee that on June 26, 2007 she will present a 10 minute power point presentation providing a brief overview of the public art framework and a history of what has been completed to date  to the Development Services Committee.  Ms. Irvine advised the purpose of this presentation is to provide information to the new members of Council who may not be aware of the Committee.  She suggested that a Public Information Meeting should be held in September 2007 and will obtain the required approval to hold that meeting at the Development Services meeting on June 26, 2007.

Ms. Jane Perdue, Consultant, advised the Committee she is incorporating all the comments and suggestions made by the Committee members with respect to the Municipal Public Art Plan.  The document will not be handed out at the meeting on June 26, 2007.

Ms. Irvine advised the Committee she is working on sections 5 and 6 of the Municipal Public Art Plan.  She has been adding leading descriptive paragraphs under every heading providing back ground information.

Ms. Irvine suggested a staff member will be required to take responsibility and implement the Municipal Public Art Plan.  Ms. Perdue advised she will have to incorporate a section in the Municipal Public Art Plan of a job description for that position and suggested Mr. Ryerson assist her with developing the roles and responsibilities for the position.   Mr. John Ryerson, Acting Director Culture, advised he is working on a report for the fall 2007 on the responsibilities of the Culture Department.

Mr. Ryerson suggested three areas in Markham that the Committee may consider approaching to discuss the opportunity of displaying public art.  The locations are:  Seneca College on Allstate Parkway, Markham Stouffville Hospital and Rouge Park.

3.         2007 ENVIRONMENTAL ART EVENT

Sean Colangelo reported to the Committee the information he has gathered with respect to the Bloor Yorkville Icefest.  He distributed a price list for ice blocks of various sizes, and a quotation from Meridian Show Production Inc.

The Committee members made the following suggestions:

·        Obtain sponsorship for each block of ice

·        Provide an ice carving workshop for children

·        Contact Toronto Tourism for sponsorship money

·        Hold the event at the Museum since there is already a Winter Fest organized there

Ms. Irvine suggested a sub-committee should be put together to flush out the details of the event and determine if it is an achievable event for this Committee to take on.  It was decided to have a  sub-committee with the following members:  Tom Giantsopoulos, Sean Colangelo and Matthew Korchinski.  Mr. Ryerson suggested the sub-committee meet with his program co-coordinator to discuss details of the Winter Fest at the Museum and determine if it can be incorporated with that event.

4.         NEW BUSINESS

Wood Donations:

Sean Colangelo advised the Committee that he has a company who is willing to donate all the wood required if the Committee decides to build birdhouses to be placed throughout the Town of Markham in ravines or pathways and walkways.

Ms. Irvine suggested Mr. Ryerson discuss it with the representative for the Rouge River and enquire if they would be interested in placing the birdhouses in their parks.
