SUBJECT:                          Sponsorship of the 2007 Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting in Markham

RECOMMENDATION:

That the report dated June 11, 2007 entitled Sponsorship of the 2007 Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting in Markham be received;

 

And that the Town of Markham sponsors the Canadian Chamber of Commerce event in 2007, in the amount of $10,000;

 

And that the one-time funding be provided for from the Corporate Contingency account, 840-841-7849;

 

And that Staff be authorized and directed to do all things necessary to give effect to this resolution.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The proposed sponsorship amount of $10,000 is approximately the same amount as the estimated cost of facility rentals the Markham Board of Trade has booked with the Town for the event.  The Culture department reports that the estimated costs for the Markham Board of Trade to rent the Civic Centre, Theatre and Art Gallery is $9,325 ($2,912, $6,213 (based on an eight-hour booking) and $200 respectively).

PURPOSE:

To obtain Council approval to provide one-time funding of $10,000 to support the Canadian Chamber of Commerce event to be held in Markham in September of this year.

 

BACKGROUND:

The annual general meeting of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will be held in Markham at the Hilton Suites from September 15 to 17, 2007.

 

The Markham Board of Trade reports that the value of contributions (including in-kind) from previous host municipalities are as follows:

·        2006 Saskatoon               $7,500

·        Charlottetown              $10,000+

·        Calgary                          $10,000

 

Details of the sponsorship opportunities for this event is attached in Appendix 1.
