PURPOSE:

This report recommends a vehicular parking prohibition on Micro Court for the purpose of improving traffic operational safety and efficiency.

BACKGROUND:

Engineering staff received a concern from the occupants of Micro Court, regarding conflicts between parked vehicles and trucks entering and exiting driveways on the subject street.

Micro Court is a 10-metre wide industrial road, located south of 14th Avenue and east of Birchmount Road. There are multiple driveways on Micro Court that provide primary access to large parking lots for passenger vehicles and loading areas for trucks.

DISCUSSION:

In response to the concerns, Engineering staff undertook a traffic operational investigation, including on-site observations.  Engineering staff documented several occasions where operators of approximately 50-foot tractor trailers experienced difficulty while entering and exiting the driveways. This difficulty is caused  by parked vehicles on Micro Court encroaching into the turning radii of the tractor trailers.

Following validation of the subject concern, Engineering staff have recommended a parking prohibition on Micro Court. The proposed parking prohibition has been strategically located to accommodate turning radii of tractor trailers at the specific industrial driveways. The proposed parking prohibition will also allow the existing parking demand of approximately 25 vehicles to be accommodated elsewhere on Micro Court. At the time of the on-site observations, Engineering staff have also documented that the parking lots have available parking stalls to handle the displacement of the parked vehicles. Hence, the proposed parking prohibition will alleviate conflicts between parked vehicles and turning trucks while minimizing negative impacts to the existing parking demand.

Engineering staff have issued notice letters, dated November 26, 2007, to both the occupants and property owners of Micro Court regarding the proposed parking prohibition. At the time of this report, Engineering staff have not received any concerns from either the occupants or the industrial property owners of Micro Court.
