The Unionville Sub-Committee convened at 1:35 PM with Councillor D. Horchik in the Chair.

1.         WEST CATHEDRAL FIRE HALL (7.15)

On May 5, 2008 the General Committee referred this proposal to the Unionville Subcommittee for a review and recommendation.

Ms. Janet Stewart, Thomas Brown Architects Inc., delivered a PowerPoint presentation that included the proposed plans, building elevations, consideration of a repeat design from the Bur Oak Fire Station and two new schemes for the Committee to consider.

Mr. Ronji Borooah, Town Architect, advised that he has reviewed the two schemes for the Cathedral Fire Hall and the suggested materials to be used are good ones. He believes the building should have its own distinctive character but, at the same time should not be out of character with the commercial buildings that will surround it.  He advised that the functionality of the building can not be compromised although the exterior can reflect the Community.

The Committee discussed whether the design of the Fire Hall should be in keeping with the commercial plaza or the Cathedral Community.  The Committee agrees that if the sloped roof elevation is approved that solar panels should not be used.

Staff advised an option to consider in place of solar panels is the geothermal (ground source energy) heating and cooling system that will be invisible and have no impact on the aesthetic.

 .

Mr. Paul McIntosh, Thomas Brown Architects Inc., advised the Committee that their team will need direction regarding the level of LEED certification they want to achieve.  Once this direction is confirmed it will allow them to proceed with the construction drawings for the building.

Moved by Mayor F. Scarpitti

Seconded by Councillor J. Virgilio

That Staff and Thomas Brown Architect continue to refine (minimum of Silver LEED certification) the Version 1 (slope roof elevation); and,

That a 3 dimensional drawing be produced and reported back to the Unionville Subcommittee prior to the recommendation report going to the General Committee meeting in June 2008.
