The Unionville Sub-Committee convened at 3:05 PM with Councillor D. Horchik in the Chair.

1.         WEST CATHEDRAL FIRE HALL (7.15)

On May 13, 2008 the Unionville Subcommittee requested that Thomas Brown Architects Inc. present three-dimensional designs of a sloped roof elevation for the West Cathedral Fire Station.

Ms. Janet Stewart, Thomas Brown Architects Inc., presented three-dimensional digital designs (top, front, rear and side views) of the proposed sloped roof elevation for the West Cathedral Fire Station.

The Committee was in agreement with the proposed design, indicating that although the proposed building has a distinctive character, it is compatible with the existing commercial development and with the Cathedral Town to the north.  The Committee requested that a sample of the proposed stone be brought to a future Unionville Subcommittee meeting once Staff has had an opportunity to meet with Ms. Helen Roman-Barber at the early detatiled design stage to discuss colour selection of the brick/stone.

The Committee discussed the proposed Tower and its role as a feature design element of the Fire Station.  They indicated consideration should be given to the following:

  • Does the Tower need to be functional?
  • Will it include a clock?
  • Should it be connected to the mezzanine?
  • Should it incorporate the Fire logo?
  • Should the area underneath the tower to remain open or closed?
  • Should there be a bell (possibly heritage) in the area underneath the Tower?

There was discussion surrounding the proposed fence/wall at the East Elevation of the building and whether it should be all masonry or have corner masonry posts only with iron or plexiglass features.

The Committee suggested that Steve Andrews, Director of Asset Management, hold a separate meeting with the Mayor to present the Thomas Brown Architect’s three-dimensional designs of the sloped roof elevation and to discuss the possibility of incorporating a clock into the Tower.

Staff advised that they anticipate bringing a report forward to the June 16, 2008 General Committee meeting.

Moved by Councillor D. Horchik

Seconded by Regional Councillor T. Wong

That the Unionville Subcommittee is in support of the three-dimensional schematic design of the proposed sloped roof elevation for the West Cathedral Fire Station as presented by Thomas Brown Architect’s at the May 21, 2008 Unionville Subcommittee meeting; and,

That Staff proceed with bringing a recommendation report to the June 16, 2008 General Committee meeting.
