The Unionville Sub-Committee convened at 8:00 AM with Councillor J. Virgilio in the Chair.

1.         MARKHAM CENTRE

            (10.0)

The Unionville Subcommittee at the October 6, 2008 meeting had requested that staff deliver a PowerPoint presentation to facilitate communicating the Markham Centre story with the community.

Mr. Richard Kendall, Manager, Central District, delivered a PowerPoint presentation outlining the past, present and future development within Markham Centre.

The Committee discussed persons per unit (p.p.u.) numbers and the density projection numbers.  Staff advised that the p.p.u. numbers are based on a combination of Census data and Regional data.  The current density projections are based on development applications received to date.

There was discussion regarding applications from larger land owners such as, Times Group on the south side of Highway 7, and whether to deal with their applications independently or together with the north side of Highway 7 (Official Plan Amendment 15).  Staff is suggesting grouping the Precinct Plan process for the north side of the Highway 7 Corridor together with the Times’ lands.  This approach will improve the interface along the Highway 7 Corridor and address matters such as access block, block patterns, open space, density, transitions and valley buffers.  The Committee is in agreement with providing a full story to the community in place of fractured information.

The Committee discussed the urgency regarding the communication process and various communication opportunities available (website, newsletter, etc).  Staff advised that they have been working with Corporate Communications.

The Committee requested that the next meeting be scheduled for Tuesday October 28, 2008 and that a draft communications plan be presented.

ADJOURNMENT
