1.         MARKHAM CENTRE

            (10.0)

The Unionville Subcommittee at the October 21, 2008 meeting had requested that staff present a draft communication plan.

Mr. Richard Kendall, Manager, Central District, delivered a PowerPoint presentation regarding a planning communications strategy for Markham Centre.

The Committee suggested changing “a walkable downtown” to “a walkable centre”.

Mr. Dennis Flaherty, Manager, Strategic Communications, delivered a PowerPoint presentation regarding a Draft 2009 communication strategy for Markham Centre.

There was discussion to include a sub-brand and incorporating a section on the Markham website highlighting updates with respect to Markham Centre.  The Committee and staff have agreed to hold the Community Open House meeting on Monday November 24, 2008. The meeting will begin with an open house component and follow with a formal presentation that will be very similar to the one presented to the Committee on October 21, 2008, which primarily outlines the past, present and future of Markham Centre.  The Committee discussed the area that the notices will be distributed to.  The notices for the Public Information meeting will be delivered by postal drop (Woodbine Avenue to the creek east of Kennedy Road, 16th Avenue to 407 Highway), the notice will also be published in the Economist and Sun and mailed to the Ratepayers Associations.  The Committee also suggested after the Public Information meeting to have a video or PowerPoint presentation (with voice in the background) depicting the information that was presented available on the Markham website.   The Committee discussed other opportunities to get the information out to the communities within Markham.  Staff suggested placing the Markham Centre newsletters in places such as the Unionville Library, Crosby Community Centre, Markville Mall, etc.

The Committee enquired on the status of the Times Group applications.  Staff advised that they anticipate Times Group will submit their revised applications within a few weeks.

The next meeting will be at the call of the Chair.
