The Markham Advisory Committee on Accessibility convened at the hour of 3:30 p.m. with Mr. Robert Hunn in the Chair.

 

1.         MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEE
MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 17, 2007

 

THE MARKHAM ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON ACCESSIBILITY RECOMMENDS:

 

That the minutes of the Town of Markham Accessibility Committee meeting held on October 17, 2007 be adopted.

2.         TOUR OF CENTENNIAL COMMUNITY CENTRE

 

The Committee toured the Centennial Community Centre expansion project to view some of the enhancements. It was noted that the facility was built to the highest design standards in 2004. The Committee was advised that the upstairs washrooms and boardroom are being made accessible at a cost in excess of $100,000.

 

 

3.         UPDATE ON ACCESSIBILITY COORDINATOR POSITION

 

There was brief discussion surrounding the job description for the Accessibility Coordinator position. Committee was advised that a request has been submitted into the current Budget discussions. The Committee suggested that the position should at least be part-time and be limited to applicants with experience in the area.

 

 

4.         MEETING DATES - 2008

 

THE MARKHAM ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON ACCESSIBILITY RECOMMENDS:

 

That the following meeting dates for 2008 be approved:

            January 16

            February 20

            March 19

            April 16

            May 21

            June 18

            September 17

            October 15

            November 19

            December 17

5.         ARTICLE FROM MUNICIPAL MONITOR:

            ACCESSIBILITY CUSTOMER SERVICE STANDARDS

 

The Committee received a copy of an article from the Municipal Monitor regarding Accessibility Customer Service Standards.

 

 

6.         REPORT FROM THE BREAKFAST MEETING FOR CHAIRS
            OF REGIONAL ACCESSIBILITY COMMITTEES

 

Mr. Hunn provided a report on the meeting of Regional Accessibility Chairs. Some of the topics of discussion included recreation fee relief for residents that are incapable of using all facilities, free snow removal services, and full service gas stations. Additionally, it was noted that the Town of Georgina ran a contest to design accessibility awareness posters and the winning designs are on display in local businesses.

 

 

7.         DISABILITY AWARENESS AND ACCESSIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING

 

The Committee agreed to discuss this item further at the next meeting.

 

 

8.         MEETING ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Mr. Hunn briefly related the attendance requirements for members. Where members are absent for three consecutive meetings, or five meetings per year without notice, their position may be declared vacant and a new member appointed.
