Introduction:  Unionville Tennis Club

From the modest beginnings in 1971 with a handful of members and 2 courts, Unionville Tennis Club ( UTC) has grown to over 1,000 members and 9 courts, to become one of Canada's largest community  tennis clubs during the summer months! Whether you are a hotly competitive player, a novice, a junior or a senior, our diverse summer programs offer you a wide array of teams, round robins, socials, professional instruction or just fun hitting with your friends and family.

Although many summer outdoor tennis courts exist in Unionville, Richmond Hill and North Scarborough, very few are available to their members or players during the winter months.  Current tennis facilities available to players in the Unionville, Markham and Richmond Hill area during the winter months exist within 2 Mayfair Clubs in Markham, Blackmore Tennis Club (Leslie & Sixteenth Ave) and L’amoreaux (Scarborough –McNicoll & Kennedy).

The possibilities of offering affordable winter time tennis within the Unionville area will provide residents with another means for seniors, adults, children and youth to remain active and healthy (see article on “Key to children’s fitness levels comes from parents’ motivation: study” from Markham Economist & Sun).   By providing an affordable winter tennis club, it will help keep the residents of the Town of Markham community fit, active and healthy during the cold months of the year.  Given the growing population within the Town of Markham (see below), it is imperative that we find ways to increase the utilization of facilities such as Unionville Tennis Club so that our community has more options for remaining fit and active.

Unionville Tennis Club (UTC)

UTC has been in existence for many years, certainly for the last 26 years it has grown leaps and bounds from a humble beginning of 2 tennis courts in 1971 to its current size of 9 courts (6 hard and 3 clay)  served by a club house with male & female toilets, kitchen and viewing area.

.

Membership of the Tennis Club (end of summer of 2007) is as follows:

During the summer of 2007, the Tennis club had 3 Ladies inter-county teams (A, B and C levels), 6 Mixed Inter-county Teams (Majors, one A, two Bs, and 2 C levels) and 6 Junior Inter-County Teams. There are 3 ladders, juniors, ladies and men along with a host of Round Robins and Social Events.  The club has both a thriving junior and adult group and with the establishment of a winter tennis club in 2008, both the junior and adult teams and programs can continue.

Club-House Premises

The single storey club premise has one main room with a kitchen, 2 washrooms and an office:

  • A large room catering for around 80 people
  • Plenty of small tables and chairs.
  • Ladies & gents toilets
  • A fully equipped kitchen
  • An office

Summary and History of the Unionville Winter Tennis Club Dome Project

Around 2 years ago, discussions about building a winter tennis club arose as UTC was approached by a company who manufactures tennis domes in England. The intent was that they would place 2 domes over the 9 courts and manage the facility and courts.  In 2006, these discussions ceased as the company is no longer interested in pursuing this venture.

There has still been a strong interest from the members of Unionville Tennis Club to have a facility where tennis can continue during the winter months. At the Annual General Meeting on November 11th, 2006 at Mayfair Parkway, Heidi Strassguertl stated that she would continue investigations and was looking for volunteers in order to establish a winter facility for tennis at Unionville Tennis Club (UTC).

Heidi Strassguertl is an active volunteer at UTC where she donates her time for the Social Programs, Ladies Programs, and Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) competitive events.    Heidi Strassguertl was approached by Costa Nicolaidis who is an active member at UTC and has spent his time in assisting with the feasibility study to install 2 domes over the 9 courts at UTC. The Unionville Winter Tennis Club will be run as a business entity and will not interfere with the volunteer based community club during the summer months. The intention is to have the 2 domes covering the 9 courts at UTC installed by October 2008.

Some of the advantages to the Town of Markham are as follows:

·        Court maintenance costs will be reduced as there is less

likelihood that cracks will occur once the courts are covered

·        Costs such as replacement of tennis nets, snow shovelling  of the Church

parking lot will be shared

·        Helps promote a healthy and active lifestyle for the residents

of Unionville and Markham during the winter months

·        Town of Markham does not have to raise the capital funds for this project.

Funds will be sourced from outside investors and run as a privately held corporation

Under the next 3 sections you will find the following:

·        Approval from the Summer Executive Team at UTC

·        Financial Plan for the Unionville Winter Tennis Club

·        Project Timelines for the Unionville Winter Tennis Club

Please support this plan with both Town of Markham and surrounding residents approvals by January 15, 2008.

Thank-you for both your time and assistance in supporting this initiative.

Yours truly,
