The second meeting of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee in 2008 convened at

7:05 PM with Tom Giantsopoulos presiding as Chair.

 

 

1.         MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE

MEETING HELD ON JANUARY 9, 2008

“That the minutes of the January 9, 2008 meeting of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee be adopted.”

2.         2008 ENVIRONMENTAL ART EVENT

 

 

The following update of the 2008 “Art on Ice” event was provided:

 

1. There will be 2 large ice sculptures: 1) flying geese to be located by Too Good Pond; and 2) a deer standing amongst a beaver to be located at the Varley McKay Art Gallery in the courtyard;


 

2. There will be the following ice sculpture demo sessions:

 

·        Saturday, February 16, 2008 (1:00 – 4:00 PM) – wolves

·        Sunday, February 17, 2008 (10:00 – 2:00 PM) – owl on stump

·        Monday, February 18, 2008 (10:00 – 2:00 PM) – squirrel on tree, and rabbit

 

 

3. Hot chocolate will be provided by Timothy’s and served at the following times:

 

·        Saturday, February 16, 2008 -1:00 PM -6:00 PM

·        Sunday, February 17, 2008 - 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

·        Monday, February 18, 200810:00 AM – 2:00 PM

 

4. Black Smith Bistro will provide catering for 40 people at the opening reception;

 

5. The Gallery will host an indoor children’s activity, and an artist demonstration of a winter sketch at the opening reception (the winter sketch may be raffled off on the last day of the event);

 

6. Planned children activities will include 8 ice walls for the children to paint on.  In order to assure there will be sufficient ice surface to paint, 2 ice walls will be built on the Sunday and 2 on Monday;

 

7. At the end of the event, Ice Culture Inc. will be responsible for assessing if any of the ice sculptures need to be immediately taken down.  The week following the event Art Gallery staff will observe the sculptures and advise the Town’s Operations Department which (if any) need to be removed;

 

8. The Operations night staff will come at 11:00 PM on the last day of the event to remove the ice walls;

 

9. There will be minimal lighting to reduce the chance of vandalism.

“That the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee extend its sincere appreciation to Bob Walter, District Manager, Signs Safety Devices and General Maintenance, and Operations staff who assisted with the execution of the “Art on Ice” event; and

 

That this resolution be forwarded to Mayor and Council, the Chief Administrative Officer, and Commissioners”.

Regional Councillor Tony Wong noted that no ice wine will be served at the “Art on Ice” event.  He also advised the Committee that Mayor Frank Scarpitti will be in attendance on Saturday, February 16, 2008 to officiate the “Art on Ice” event.

 

Promotion

 

Tom Giantsopoulos, Chair, provided an update on behalf of Catherine Harrison’s, Manager of Communication Services, Town of Markham, regarding the promotion of the “Art on Ice” event:

 

·        Reference to the event was made in the Mayor's Message in the February 2008 edition of SNAP magazine;

·        An Article and ad was placed in Markham Arts Council’s February Newsletter;

·        Electronic posters were displayed on the electronic screens at Civic Centre, Markham Museum, and Markham Theatre;

·        Poster were posted at Markham Theatre, Angus Glen Community Centre, and Milliken Mills Community Centre;

·        An advertisement was placed on the Town’s Page in the Economist and Sun/Liberal (Feb 7 and 14 editions);

·        An Advertisement was placed in the Saturday, February 16, 2008 edition of the Economist & Sun and the Sing Tao Daily;

·        An “Art on Ice” banner was hung on Main Street Unionville;

·        Flyers for the event were handed out at Markham Museum during Winterfest;

·        The Event was listed on the Community Calendar on the Town website and featured on the Varley McKay Art Gallery’s website;

·        A Press Release was issued February 11, 2008.

 

Laura Gold, Committee Clerk, was requested to send a reminder e-mail to Mayor and Members of Council regarding the “Art on Ice” event.  Sue Firkser, School Program Coordinator, requested that thank you letters be sent to sponsors of the event.  The Committee noted that the print on the “Art on Ice” banner was fading considerably.

 

3.         NEW BUSINESS

A) Liberty Developments – Cast Bronze Sculpture

 

This item was deferred to the next meeting.


B)              Member Resignation

 

Tom Giantsopoulos, Chair, advised the Committee he will be resigning from the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee, which means a new Chair must be elected.

4.         DATE FOR NEXT MEETING

 

The next meeting of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the Ontario Room at the Markham Civic Centre.
