1.                  BILL 124 AND FOREIGN TRAINED PROFESSIONALS

 

Committee was advised that Dan Leinwand, and Susan Brooks, Policy Advisors, Ministry of Citizen and Immigration, are unable to attend. They will be available for the March 3, 2008 meeting.

 

 

2.         MINUTES OF THE FIRST MARKHAM RACE RELATIONS
COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON JANUARY 7, 2008                                

 

THE TOWN OF MARKHAM RACE RELATIONS COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS:

 

            That the minutes of the Town of Markham Race Relations Committee meeting held on January 7, 2008 be adopted with a minor typographical amendment.

3.         IMPACT OF BILL 130 ON TOWN COMMITTEES (UPDATE)                        

 

There was brief discussion regarding the Bill 130 requirements. It was agreed there will be little impact on the regular operations of the Committee.

 

 

4.         SUB-COMMITTEE UPDATES

 

            a)         Events

There was considerable discussion surrounding the Many Faces of Markham event. Committee was advised that packages regarding the poster contest have been sent to schools. A couple of groups have been contacted about performing, including flamenco and Sri Lankan dance groups. Vedic Cultural Centre won the contest to perform a diversity play.

 

There was also discussion about a strategy to engage media interest as well as whether performers could be sponsored for their performances.

 

Judging of the writing contest will happen on March 1, 2008 and tickets for the event will be on sale from the third week of March.

 

 

            b)         Policy

There was brief discussion surrounding the composition and mandate of the Committee. It was agreed that the Committee should be more proactive in assisting Council on policy issues. It was suggested that the Committee should be comprised of one representative from each Ward and that each Ward Councillor could then consult on relevant issues.

 

 

5.         NEW BUSINESS

 

Members agreed to discuss the UNESCO Coalition of Canadian Municipalities Against Discrimination and Racism Program at the next meeting.

            The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
