SUBJECT:                          2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Allocation by the Grants Sub-Committee including the 2008 Character Community Program

PREPARED BY:               Andrea Tang, Manager of Financial Planning

RECOMMENDATION:

That the report dated May 26, 2008 entitled “2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Allocation by the Grants Sub-Committee including the 2008 Character Community Program” be received;

And that $5,000 be allocated to Character Community from the unallocated balance of $5,250 within the 2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Budget;

And that the recommendations from the April 21, 2008 report entitled “2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Allocation by the Grants Sub-Committee” be approved;

And that Staff be authorized and directed to do all things necessary to give effect to this resolution.

PURPOSE:

To obtain approval to allocate $5,000 from the remaining Celebrate Markham Grants Budget to Character Community for the 2008 Character Community program.

BACKGROUND:

On April 21, 2008, the report entitled “2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Allocation by the Grants Sub-Committee” (Appendix A) was brought forward to the General Committee.  As outlined in the report, the Grants Sub-Committee recommended that “any costs relating to the Character Community Initiative be removed from the 2008 Celebrate Markham Grants budget and absorbed in the 2008 Operating Budget”.  In 2007, the Grants Sub-Committee allocated $20,000 to Character Community

The resolution from the April 21, 2008 General Committee was that the report “be deferred to a future meeting of General Committee pending further information on the Character Community program”.

DISCUSSION:

Since the April 21, 2008 General Committee, Staff from the Character Community group have met to discuss and propose the 2008 Character Community program.

In the past, Character Community utilized a portion of the grant funding from the Celebrate Markham Grants Budget in providing recognition to the participants at the Tony Roman Hockey Tournament for applying character in the sport.  Staff would like to continue this initiative and, in addition, initiate a pilot program to expand to other sports groups in Markham in offering similar recognition to their participants.  The pilot program will provide a more diverse outreach to the Markham youth sports community while promoting good character with their families.

The 2008 Character Community program will require funding of $5,000.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The report entitled “2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Allocation by the Grants Sub-Committee” outlines that there is an unallocated amount of $5,250 in the 2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Budget.

Staff recommends that the 2008 Character Community program in the amount of $5,000 be funded from the remaining budget from the 2008 Celebrate Markham Grants Budget.
