The first meeting of the Canadian Sports Institute, Ontario (CSIO) Steering Committee in 2008, convened at 2:00 pm with Councillor Alex Chiu as Chair.

1.                  Review and Update of Deloitte Report

Brenda Librecz, Commissioner of Community Services, provided a draft copy of the Deloitte report, and advised that it should be finalized this week. The capital estimates are firm, but the operating estimates are still being prepared.

2.                  Pan Am Games – Bid Timeline

Brenda Librecz advised that finalization of the timelines for a bid by the Toronto and Greater Horseshoe for the 2015 Pan Am Games is pending. A broad presentation is due in October, 2008, outlining the location, key geography, and an explanation of our hosting capabilities.  The members of the Bid Committee have yet to be determined.

The International Olympic Committee is anticipated to make its final decision in April, 2009, rather than the previous target date of October 2009, which means that bids have to be in by March.

3.                  Review of Report and Presentation – ‘CSIO Update’

Staff briefly reviewed the presentation that was made to General Committee on September 8, 2008.

The Committee noted that although the Pan Am Games present an excellent opportunity, the ultimate purpose of this committee is to advance the CSIO project. The Town will need to determine what needs to be done for the bid book, and complete those requirements.

Discussions included the timing of requests to Infrastructure Canada and Infrastructure Ontario. The Consulting fees of $50,000 to lead this process are due to the complicated nature of the documentation.

The strategy, configuration, and partnership for preliminary site layout and facility fit plans in the context of the Markham Centre Plan are being worked on, although Markham’s bid will focus on the Aquatic Centre, the Field House, and Competition Venues.

There are 30 or 40 organizations that have provided letters of support, and the Town will have to follow-up with them. The mayor requested a list of the organizations.

4.                  Communications Plan

Communication plans will be collaborated with CSCO, with the key message of “Playground to Podium”. CSCO has selected Markham for its centralized location, linkages to local and provincial sport development, and excellent partnerships.

5.                  Next Meeting

The next meeting of CSIO Committee will be held in approximately one month, and then will be followed by meetings every two weeks.

6.         Adjournment

The CSIO Committee meeting adjourned at 2:40 pm.
