PURPOSE:

This report recommends the removal of the existing parking prohibition within the cul-de-sac on Montgomery Court.

BACKGROUND:

Montgomery Court is a local residential street in Unionville, located northeast of the intersection of Highway 7 and Woodbine Avenue (see Attachment A).  Montgomery Court has a pavement width of 8.5 metres, ending in a cul-de-sac where parking is currently prohibited.

In Summer 2009, the resident living at 84 Montgomery Court approached the Town requesting that the parking prohibition within the cul-de-sac be modified to address their concern with respect to on-street parking.  Traffic Operations staff subsequently investigated and concluded that altering the parking prohibition was not justified.  Also, any possible modifications may be cause for concern among his neighbours.  Therefore, Staff requested that he submit a petition, with his neighbours endorsing the removal of the prohibition.

In October 2009, the Town received a petition from the households fronting the cul-de-sac (82, 84, 86 and 88 Montgomery Court), requesting that the current parking prohibition be removed in its entirety (see Attachment B).  Residents claim that removing the parking prohibition will allow them to park on the street, thereby improving their quality of life.

DISCUSSION:

In response to the petition received, Traffic Operations staff re-evaluated the parking conditions within the cul-de-sac and concluded that removing the parking prohibition would not compromise traffic safety.

Also, given that the affected residents are all in-support of the removal, claiming that it will improve the quality of life on their street, Traffic Operations staff recommend that the prohibition be removed.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The cost to remove the signs is included for in the Operations Department account # 83-5399-8402-005.

ALIGNMENT WITH STRATEGIC PRIORITIES:

This report aligns with the service delivery components of the Municipal Services Strategic Priority.
