SUBJECT:                          Increase in Parking Fine Amounts

RECOMMENDATION:

That the report entitled “Increase in Parking Fine Amounts” be received; and

 

That Staff be directed to apply to the Regional Senior Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice (Provincial Division) for setting of the proposed fines amounts; and

 

That the 2009 Operating Budget Revenue Account for Parking Fines be increased by $90,000 in 2009 and by $125,000 in 2010; and further,

 

That Staff be authorized and directed to do all things necessary to give effect to this resolution.

PURPOSE:

To receive Council’s approval for an increase to $40.00 as the minimum parking fine.

 

BACKGROUND:

On November 24, 2008, the Budget Sub-Committee approved the initiative of increasing the average parking ticket fee from $35 to $40. Notice of the fine increases will be provided on the Town’s website and on the Town page of the local newspapers.

 

FINANCIAL TEMPLATE

The increase in revenues in 2009 is projected to be approximately $90,000 (subject to receipt of approval of Regional Senior Justice with an April 1, 2009 implementation date) and the annualized impact will be approximately $125,000 beginning in 2010.  Attachment 1 lists the current fine amounts established in 2005 and proposed increases.
