The Grants Sub-Committee meeting convened at the hour of 1:35 p.m. with Councillor V. Burke in the Chair. 

 

 

 

1.                  2009 BASE BUDGET FOR CELEBRATE MARKHAM

 

Mr. Joel Lustig, Director of Financial and Client Services, briefly reviewed the Agenda and noted that the allocation for the 2009 Celebrate Markham Grants is currently $234,250. 

 

Members advised that adjustments would be put forward regarding the current allocation of some of the events, and following some discussion, it was agreed that each item of the Celebrate Markham Grants would be considered individually this date.

 

 

 

2.                  PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION ON THE 2009 GRANTS ALLOCATION

 

Black History Month – No change to current grant of $2,000.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chinese New Year Celebration

Moved by Deputy Mayor J. Heath, Seconded by Councillor A. Chiu

That the Chinese New Year Celebration Grant be increased by $2,000 to $10,000.

CARRIED

 

 

Senior’s Extravaganza – No change to current grant of $3,500.

 

 

Canada Day Celebrations – There was some discussion regarding the cost of the fireworks display which had been presented at the Markham BIA’s Festival of Lights event.  Committee requested details regarding the cost of the fireworks display which had been presented at the Canada Day celebrations at Milne Park in 2008.  Councillor Alex Chiu will raise this at the next meeting of the Canada Day Committee.  No change to current grant of $50,000, at this time.

 

 

Markham Rotary Club Santa Claus Parade – No change to current grant of $16,500.

 

 

Unionville Festival; Markham Festival; Thornhill Festival; Doors Open Markham; Markham Jazz Festival – Following some discussion regarding the feasibility of increasing the current $9,500 grants to each Festival, it was agreed that there would be no change at this time.  Committee would consider any additional requests when received.

 

 

Milliken Mills Children’s Festival – No change to current grant of $13,500.

 

 

Senior’s Hall of Fame – No change to current grant of $2,000.

 

 

Volunteer Appreciation Event (September Corn Roast) – There was some discussion regarding the feasibility of holding this event every two years rather than annually, as the attendance had not been very large this year, and it was felt that the event should be revamped.

 

Moved by Deputy Mayor J. Heath; Seconded by Councillor A. Chiu

That it be recommended that the Volunteer Appreciation Event not occur in 2009; and

That the $8,000 grant be reduced to $0 for 2009; and

That staff be requested to review the event based on the concerns expressed this date.

Senior Citizen’s Light Tour – No change to current grant of $3,000.

 

 

Taste of Asia Festival – No change to current grant of $15,000.

 

 

Markham Rotary Ribfest – No change to current grant of $7,500.

 

 

Markham Arts Council – There was some discussion regarding increasing the grant by $1,000, but Members generally agreed to make no change at this time and consider any additional request when received.

 

 

York Region Celebration of the Arts

Moved by Deputy Mayor J. Heath; Seconded by Councillor L. Kanapathi

That the York Region Celebration of the Arts grant, in the amount of $2,500, be removed.

Tony Roman Hockey Tournament

Moved by Deputy Mayor J. Heath; Seconded by Councillor A. Chiu

That the Tony Roman Hockey Tournament grant, be increased by $1500 to $7,500.

CARRIED

 

 

Tourism Markham

No change to current grant of $5,000.

 

 

Markham Race Relations Committee (One-time Increase in 2008)

It was agreed that the grant amount would be left at $0 for 2009.

 

 

Seniors Clubs (Up to $3,000 per club)

No change to current total grant of $15,000.

 

 

Character Community

Moved by Deputy Mayor J. Heath; Seconded by Councillor A. Chiu

That the Character Community grant be eliminated, and the 2009 amount of $5,000 be reduced to $0.

Allocation for Signage

Moved by Deputy Mayor J. Heath; Seconded by Councillor L. Kanapathi

That the Allocation for Signage grant be eliminated, and the 2009 amount of $1,000 be reduced to $0.
