Grant Program:  Culture Infrastructure Program / Recreation Infrastructure Program (RiNC)

Project Summary: Daniels-Fairty House - Restoration

There is a strong community interest in restoring this Heritage Structure, located at the North West corner of Steeles and Markham Roads, for recreation and cultural use.

The building was constructed circa 1850 and was part of the original hamlet of Armadale.

The building was designated as a Heritage Structure in 2003 and is owned by the Town for approximately 6 years.  The house is in serious need of repair.

The house has been recommended to be retained as part of a larger structure with flexible uses for several occupational uses at one time.

The scope of work would demolish certain non-heritage parts of the structure and remediate the Heritage Structure to sustain the foundations and building envelope and the interior to meet Accessibility requirements.   The addition portion of up to 10,000 square feet is meant to give the site a usable size to meet the community interests ranging from seniors activities to cultural societies and minority groups.

Cost & Timeline:

The total Cost of the Project is $2,400,000; $400,000 for existing structure rehabilitation and $2,000,000 for addition encompassing structure.  The timeline for this project would be 2 years

Benefits:

The location of the Daniels-Farity House is located in an area highly populated by new Canadians.   This structure would give the community an opportunity to congrigate and unite cultures in the spirit of recreation.

The building is in a Gateway location to the Town of Markham, adjacent to Markham and Steeles Parkland and the Markham Waterfall Town Signage and could be designed to represent this theme and take advantage of the adjacent parklands.
