1.         ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES OF THE MAIN STREET

MARKHAM COMMITTEE MEETING OF MAY 20, 2010

THE MAIN STREET MARKHAM COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS:

That the Minutes of the Main Street Markham Committee meeting held on May 20, 2010, be adopted.

                                                                                                                            CARRIED

2.         UPDATES:

a)                 Main Street Markham Environmental Assessment

Peter Ross provided an update and advised that the EA will be presented to Development Services Committee on June 22, then will go on to Council for anticipated endorsement that same evening. Peter will be in attendance to answer any questions from Council. Peter confirmed that letters of appreciation had been sent out on behalf of the Committee, as directed at the last Main Street Markham meeting.

The Committee conveyed appreciation to Peter for his extensive, ongoing work on this project.

b)                 Incoming Planning Applications

Staff advised of a Consent application for 15 Rouge Street. The single lot would be severed into two lots, with the heritage house being retained on one of the lots. Staff will be recommending a condition that a heritage easement be obtained to ensure protection of the  house.

There are several commercial façade grants and property improvement grants currently being processed.

c)         Public Washrooms

Staff advised that the washroom building has been approved by Council, with the condition that an access easement be obtained. It will proceed to the tender process but won’t be completed until later this year. Diane Kobelansky noted that temporary facilities had been requested for the summer, however the cost is not feasible. Arrangements are being made to have a porta-potty be provided each weekend. The temporary facilities would be able to accommodate disabled persons.

d)         Budget Subcommittee – Keith Thirgood

Keith provided a summary of the budget proposal and the Committee discussed the items:

Parkette plantings - tentative amount - $2,000

Historic plaques – phased in over a number of years - $10,000

Benches and trash receptacles – quantity to be determined

-  $1,500 per bench, and $ TBD per receptacle

Ongoing replacement of trees – assuming 20 trees per year @$300 = $6,000

Tannery Pond – completion (Phase 3) has been budgeted, but funds should be allocated for ongoing maintenance. It was suggested that Markham Environmental Sustainability Committee may provide funding.

Main Street detailed design - $150,000 was allocated in the 2010 budget for the design work for Hwy 7 to Church Street. Funds should be requested for the remaining two sections. An appropriate amount will be determined.

3.         NEW BUSINESS

-                 GO Train is tearing down the trestle north of Bullock Drive. Public consultation and commenting opportunities are being provided.

-                 Markham Main Street’s annual art show was held in Unionville this year. There was a greater turn-out but fewer sales. This speaks to the commercial effectiveness of Main Street Markham.
