SUBJECT: 2010 Recruit Firefighter Protective Equipment
PREPARED BY: Phil Alexander, Deputy Fire Chief ext. 5960
RECOMMENDATION:
1) THAT the report entitled “2010 Recruit Firefighter Protective Equipment” be received;
2) AND THAT Council authorize the purchase of the new recruit Firefighter Protective Equipment to a maximum cost of $124,340.00 to be funded from the Fire Services Development Charges Reserve;
3) AND THAT a new 2010 capital project be established in the amount of $124,340.00 for this purchase;
4) AND THAT staff be authorized and directed to do all things necessary to give effect to this resolution.
The purpose of this report is to seek Council authorization to fund the purchase of recruit (Cathedral) firefighter protective equipment from Development Charges.
The construction of the Cathedral Fire Station is nearing completion and to facilitate its opening in July 2010 the firefighter recruitment has been undertaken and their training commenced. To facilitate the completion of their practical training before they start going on shift, it is necessary for the new recruits to be provided with the required protective equipment and clothing.
The estimated cost of each recruit firefighter’s clothing and equipment is $6,200 (exclusive of taxes) and this can be funded through development charges as the 2009 Development Charges Background Study identified $124,340 for this purpose. Council approval is required as there was no application for budget approval included in the 2010 budget cycle.
