1.      MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING HELD NOVEMBER 8, 2006

With no quorum, it was determined that the approval of the minutes would take place at the next meeting.

  1. MUNICIPAL PUBLIC ART PLAN

Mr. Paul Leonidis and Mr. Anderson Coward submitted written contributions to the draft Municipal Public Art Plan.  Mr. Leonidis suggested adding a section in the plan entitled “Infrastructure” to describe how the Town can use public art to beautify existing and new infrastructure elements. Suggestions for the section include:

    • Incorporating public art on infrastructure design and details like sewer grates and lamp posts, concrete overpasses and retaining walls
    • Adding sculpture reliefs to existing and new concrete expanses
    • Using lighting to accentuate architectural features on buildings
    • Using the annual environmental art event to commission infrastructure public art
    • Incorporating public art at key intersections (like Steeles/Woodbine, Warden and other north/south arteries)

Mr. Leonidis suggested also emphasizing that public art be incorporated into the Town’s infrastructure elements in sections 2.4, 3.3, 5.1 and 6.1 of the draft plan.  The committee agreed that where possible, images should be included in the plan to provide examples of the concepts and ideas being proposed.

Mr. Anderson Cooper suggested areas where public art opportunities exist, including the Skateboard park at McCowan & Bullock and land areas near Markham Fairgrounds.

The committee agreed that comments from the other MPAAC members should be provided for the section on neighbourhoods.  The committee then advanced to page 14 of the draft plan and made the following additional suggestions:

  • Section 7.1, second paragraph, question 3) add ‘aesthetic considerations’ to historical/cultural significance
  • Section 7.2, under art commission methods, include how the Town of Markham can work with developers to incorporate public art in existing projects and/or require public art components in development proposals.

The committee discussed how and if minutes could be circulated earlier, even in draft format, given that the committee is working together to draft a document.

Action items:

Mr. Paul Leonidis will investigate if earlier circulation of the minutes is possible

Mr. Tom Giantsopoulous will email a reminder to the MPAAC members to ask that they review the draft plan and provide Jane Perdue with comments as soon as possible.

3.  NEW BUSINESS

Mr. Tom Giantsopoulous suggested that a review of the committee’s membership and composition should take place at the first meeting in the New Year.
