SUMMARY OF CHANGES -2007 CELEBRATE MARKHAM GRANTS
BUDGE
INCREASES
- Celebrate Markham
grants for the Unionville, Markham,
Thornhill festivals, the Markham Jazz Festival, and the Doors Open
Festival will be increased by $1,000 each (from $7,500 in 2006 to $8,500
in 2007 for each event).
- The Taste of Asia festival’s grant will be increased by $1,000
(from $12,500 in 2006 to $13,500 in 2007).
- The Chinese New Year grant was increased $2,500 by General
Committee/ Council.
- The Senior’s Extravaganza will be increased by $200 (from
$3,300 to $3,500).
DECREASES
- The Character Community Budget will be decreased by $5,000
(from $25,000 to $20,000) based on a presentation received by the Grants
Sub-Committee on the proposed spending related to the Markham Sports
Council.
- At the March 19th General Committee meeting, the Character
Community Committee proposed a budget of $25,000 to be spent on
promotions, guest speakers for staff and Tony Roman character trophies
($15,000) and Markham Sports Council initiatives ($10,000).
- General Committee approved the $15,000 and referred the
$10,000 of Markham Sports Council initiatives to the Grants
Sub-Committee.
- At the March 29th Grants Sub-Committee meeting, a
representative from the Character Community Committee presented the
concept of partnering with the Markham Sports Council but conveyed to
committee members that no specific initiatives and budgets have been
received from the Sports Council to date.
- The Grants Sub-Committee approved an allocation $5,000 of the
requested $10,000 for Markham Sport Council initiatives and requested
that the Character Community Committee communicate their selection of
Markham Sports Council initiatives and the corresponding budget, when
available.
- The $20,000 2007 Character Community Budget is now comprised
of promotions, guest speakers for staff and Tony Roman character trophies
($15,000) and Markham Sports Council initiatives ($5,000).
- The Volunteer Appreciation event will be decreased by $3,500
(from $12,500 to $9,000) based on 2006 actual expenditures.
- The Allocation for Signage will be decreased by $1,500 (from
$2,500 to $1,000).
NEW GRANTS
ADDED TO 2007 CELEBRATE MARKHAM:
- The Tony Roman Hockey Tournament for $5,000 was added to
Celebrate Markham. Funding for this
tournament is requested of Council each year as it exceeds staff’s limit
of $1,000.
- $4,750 for a one-time start-up grant for a Tourism Markham
initiative organized and staffed by the Information Markham &
Volunteer Centre organization. The
Grants Sub-Committee received a presentation from a member of the
Information Markham & Volunteer Centre organization on this subject
(funding request is attached as Appendix 3).
