Animal Care Facility

The Committee reviewed Sheila’s motion (on behalf of the Committee) to Council requesting that the Town of Markham open its own Animal Care Shelter.

The motion is as follows:

Town of Markham Animal Care Facility

Motion moved by Denielle Duncan

Seconded by Terri Daniels

Whereas residents of the Town of Markham are demanding excellent animal care services;

And Whereas over the past few years, actions have been taken to provide improved animal care services to the residents of the Town of Markham;

And Whereas one of the main improvements to the animal care service has been the transfer of services to the Town of Whitby;

And Whereas Council established an Animal Care Services Committee, whose primary role is to educate residents on animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering and appropriate veterinary services; providing for reasonable and affordable veterinary services to residents; arranging for adoptions and fund raising;

And Whereas Members of the Animal Care Services Committee feel strongly that the Town of Markham should own its own animal care facility within its own boundaries:

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved that it be recommended to Council that staff be directed to review and report on options for the provision of an animal care facility located within the Town of Markham, including appropriate financing options.

The Committee was informed that the OSPCA will be taking over the Town of Markham’s Animal Care Services Contract.  The date is yet to be established, but tentatively set for June or July 2008.

Present the resolution at an upcoming General Committee meeting.

North Toronto Cat Rescue Shelter

Donna Cox and Carol Cohen spoke on behalf of North Toronto Cat Rescue.  They advised the Committee that they are not looking for any financial support from the Committee, although it would help substantially, but they are asking the Committee to put forth a motion to waive all zoning fees related to the temporary re-zoning application for their shelter.

Meet with Ben Quan to discuss a resolution to the zoning concern. Advise North Toronto Cat Rescue of the outcome of the meeting.

Once a zoning resolution has been established, provide the Committee with a financial plan, outlining all costs associated with opening and maintaining of the shelter.
